PhD 2 (industrial ecology)

Description:

Determine the metabolism of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona in terms of water, energy, food, and waste in order to identify ways of optimizing resource use. Explore how the city and peri-urban areas can work together to close material cycles and promote a more efficient city. What role can green infrastructures play in promoting more efficient and clean cities? Determine scenarios that will be relevant for the creation of the Master Urban Plan (Pla Director Urbanistic PDU) to implement more resource-efficient city in the future. Determine the environmental impact in terms of life cycle assessment of such scenarios and related socioeconomic impacts.

Tasks

The candidate will participate mainly in the following tasks (these are further described in work packages 1 and 3 click here):

  1. Perform a city-wide metabolism characterization with a focus on the energy, water, food and waste nexus. Develop a dynamic material flow analysis of recovered nutrients and collected rainwater for local food optimization. Determine the life cycle carbon footprint of the city.
  2. Help design scenarios based on results of environmental impact assessment and urban atmosphere implications, the city’s greening policies and social implications of the green infrastructures, that best build on existing plans, policies, and practices, and are socially- and politically-acceptable.
  3. Establish a research-policy translation pathway useful for/in cooperation with city’s departmental managers in urban sustainability and biodiversity, urban planners, and other stakeholders. Use this pathway to describe the environmental and social benefits and policy impact of the scenarios defined in URBAG.
  4. Examine the political and social feasibility of replication and upscaling of expanded urban/peri-urban agriculture and green spaces, paying particular attention to constraints to further develop green spaces.

Requirements:

Bachelors in science, masters in urbanism, social science, industrial ecology, or similar; GIS tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS, knowledge of LCA with simapro, openLCA or similar, as well as databases; programming in R and python also useful; written and oral proficiency in Catalan and/or Spanish, and English.
